What is Macy's return policy? Get the 30-day rule, the $9.99 mail return fee, no-receipt returns, perfume and furniture rules, holiday 2026 deadlines and refund times.

Macy's gives you 30 days from purchase or delivery to return most items unworn, with tags attached. Store returns cost nothing. Mail returns are free for Star Rewards members and cost $9.99 plus tax for everyone else. Last Act items are final sale, and holiday purchases made October 5 to December 31, 2026 can be returned until January 31, 2027.
Plenty of guides online still say Macy's gives you 90 days to return something. That number is out of date. The standard window today is 30 days. The fine print shifts with what you bought, where you bought it and whether you kept the receipt.
This guide walks through the current Macy's return policy using Macy's own help center pages. You'll see each category's return window, what a mail return costs, how no-receipt returns work and how long refunds take.
Under the official Macy's return policy, most items can go back within 30 days of purchase or delivery. Products need to be unworn, unaltered and in original packaging, with the original tags still attached. Refunds go back to your original form of payment.
Several categories follow their own rules, so check this table before you head to the store.
| What you bought | Return window | Key condition |
|---|---|---|
| Most clothing, shoes, home and accessories | 30 days from purchase or delivery | Unworn, tags attached, original packaging |
| Cosmetics and fragrances | 30 days | Accepted if they don't meet your needs |
| Jewelry and watches | 30 days from delivery | Tags attached; inspection can take up to 14 business days |
| Mattresses | 120 days from delivery | One return or reselection; $99 pickup fee |
| Furniture with scheduled delivery | 3 days from delivery | As-new condition; 15% restocking fee |
| Furniture shipped by UPS or a vendor | 30 days from delivery | Original packaging; 15% return fee; no store returns |
| Area rugs | 30 days | Valid receipt required |
| Burberry | 14 days from purchase | Herald Square store only, original receipt |
| Holiday 2026 purchases | Until January 31, 2027 | Bought October 5 to December 31, 2026 |
| Last Act items | No returns | Final sale, no exchanges or price adjustments |
For regular merchandise, the clock runs 30 days. Store purchases count from the purchase date, and online orders count from the delivery date. A dress delivered on March 3 can go back until April 2.
Macy's help center doesn't list a grace period after 30 days, so a return on day 35 may simply be refused. The one standard extension is the holiday window covered further down. If you see a 90-day Macy's return policy mentioned somewhere, treat that page as outdated.
Macy's says it can't accept worn, washed, damaged or altered items, or anything missing its original tags, packaging or included materials. That rule is where most rejected returns come from.
Buy one, get one deals work a little differently. The discount gets split across both items, so returning one gives you the discounted price back, not the full tag price.
Yes. Macy's accepts cosmetics and fragrances back within 30 days if they don't meet your needs. That makes the Macy's perfume return policy fairly forgiving. An opened bottle that doesn't suit you can usually still go back.
A few fragrance purchases are stricter. Louis Vuitton fragrances must have sealed, unopened packaging, and engraved bottles are final sale. Bring the receipt or order number if you can, since beauty returns are faster to process when the purchase is easy to find.
Macy's treats the following as final sale, which means no returns, exchanges or price adjustments:
Is Macy's Last Act final sale? Yes, every time. Regular clearance items aren't on that list, though. If the tag doesn't say Last Act or final sale, a clearance purchase follows the standard 30-day rule.
No receipt doesn't always mean no return. Store associates can often look up the purchase using any of these:
If the purchase can't be found, Macy's issues store credit at the item's lowest selling price in the last 180 days. On a jacket bought at $120 that later dropped to $60, you'd get $60 back.
That credit often arrives as a Merchandise Only Certificate. It works only in Macy's stores, expires after two years, and purchases made with it don't earn Star Rewards. Macy's Backstage uses a 90-day lowest-price rule instead, and may ask for your name and address.
Some purchases need a valid receipt no matter what: area rugs, The Rug Gallery, Louis Vuitton and Burberry. Without one, those returns usually won't be accepted.
Only online purchases can be mailed back. Here's how the Macy's online return process works:
Mail refunds usually take longer than store returns, so if you're close to day 30, a store visit is the safer choice.
In-store purchases must go back to a Macy's store. Online orders can be returned to a store too, and that's the quickest way to get your money back.
Take the item and your receipt, order confirmation or packing slip to a store register or customer service desk. Curbside pickup spots don't accept returns. Furniture goes to a Macy's Furniture Gallery, and store-bought area rugs go to a Rug Gallery in select stores.
For store purchases, exchanges happen only in a Macy's store. Online orders can be exchanged in a store or by mail.
Mail exchanges aren't direct swaps, though. Macy's processes them as returns, so you send the item back, get the refund and place a new order for the size or color you want at its current price. If that item has gone up in price, you'll pay the new price.
It depends on how you return the item.
| Return method | Cost |
|---|---|
| Any purchase returned in a store | No charge |
| Mail return, Star Rewards member | No charge |
| Mail return, not a member | $9.99 plus tax, taken out of your refund |
| Lamps, wall art, mirrors, furniture, beds, area rugs | Not covered by return shipping |
| Original shipping and delivery fees | Not refunded |
Star Rewards is Macy's loyalty program, and joining it is what removes the mail return fee. If you return by mail often, signing up before you start the return saves you the $9.99.
Big-ticket items come with the tightest rules and the highest fees, according to Macy's furniture and mattress policy.
Furniture and mattress returns start by phone at 1-888-822-6229, available daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET.
Gifts bought early get extra time. Under the Macy's holiday 2026 return policy, eligible purchases made between October 5 and December 31, 2026 can be returned until January 31, 2027.
A few things stay on the regular schedule. Dyson and Mac Duggal items keep the standard 30-day window, and Last Act items remain final sale. Furniture and mattresses follow their own policy, not the holiday extension.
Gift returns without the buyer's receipt are refunded as store credit. A gift receipt makes the exchange much smoother for the person receiving it.
Store returns are usually refunded on the spot. Mail returns are processed within 10 business days of Macy's receiving the package, then your bank adds its own time.
| Payment method or situation | Typical timing |
|---|---|
| In-store return | Usually immediate |
| Mail return processing | Within 10 business days of receipt |
| Credit or debit card | About 5 to 7 more business days to appear |
| PayPal or Klarna | 7 to 10 business days |
| Jewelry and watches | After inspection, up to 14 business days |
| Split payment balance | Remainder as store credit within 2 to 4 weeks |
If something you bought goes on sale, Macy's offers a price adjustment within 10 days of the order date. The lower price has to be an advertised Macy's price, and you can't stack a promo code on top. Request it through chat or by calling 1-800-289-6229, or bring your receipt to a store for in-store purchases.
Canceling works on a short timer. You can cancel a Macy's order up to 30 minutes after placing it for shipped orders, or 15 minutes for store pickup and same-day delivery. After that, the order is already processing, so your only option is a return once it arrives.
Not everything sold through Macy's goes back the same way.
Every no-receipt rule above costs you money. Without proof of purchase, you get store credit at the lowest price from the last 180 days, not a refund to your card. A saved receipt is often the difference between full value and a certificate you can only spend in a store.
ManageReceipt keeps that proof in one place. Forward your Macy's order confirmations with email receipts, and snap in-store receipts with the receipt scanner before you leave the parking lot. Gift receipts, mattress delivery paperwork and furniture invoices can sit in the doc wallet, which helps when a 120-day mattress trial hinges on a forgotten delivery date.
Small businesses that buy uniforms, décor or office furnishings from Macy's have one extra step. A return changes what the business actually spent. Keeping the return slip next to the original receipt means your expense reports show the real cost after the refund.
Most items can be returned within 30 days of purchase or delivery, unworn and with tags attached. Store returns are free, and mail returns cost $9.99 plus tax unless you're a Star Rewards member.
The standard window is 30 days. Mattresses get 120 days, furniture with scheduled delivery gets only 3 days, and holiday 2026 purchases can be returned until January 31, 2027.

Open the order details and select Cancel Order within 30 minutes for shipped orders, or 15 minutes for pickup and same-day delivery.
Most Macy's returns come down to three checks: are you inside 30 days, are the tags still on, and can you prove the purchase. Return in a store when you can, join Star Rewards if you mail returns often, and keep every receipt until the return window closes.
Keep every Macy's receipt in one placeScan store receipts and forward order emails to Manage Receipt before your 30 days run out.
This guide is based on the Macy's return policy published on macys.com as of October 2026. Macy's can change its policy at any time, so confirm the rules for your item before returning it.
