The Nordstrom return policy has no fixed return window, but that does not mean every return is accepted. Here is how full-line Nordstrom returns work, how Nordstrom Rack's 40-day rule differs, and what you get back with or without a receipt.

Nordstrom has no time limit on returns or exchanges, and returns to Nordstrom stores and by mail are free. Each return is still reviewed case by case, so Nordstrom can decline one. With a receipt or order number, you are refunded to your original payment method. Without a sales record, you need ID and get a Nordstrom gift card at the current price. Nordstrom Rack is stricter: 40 days, receipt required, and a $9.95 fee on mailed returns.
Just shopped at NordstromSnap the receipt or forward the order email to the Manage Receipt app. Your purchase record stays easy to find, even if you return the item months later.
The official Nordstrom return policy is one of the most relaxed in US retail, but the details change with how you paid, where you bought and what you bought.
| Your situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| With a receipt or order number | Refund to your original payment method. No set deadline. |
| No receipt, purchase can be found | Nordstrom looks it up and may ask for more information. |
| No receipt, no sales record | If accepted, refund as a Nordstrom gift card at the current price. Photo ID required. |
| Gift receipt | Refund to the original payment method or a Nordstrom gift card. |
| Online order | Free return by mail, by QR code at USPS or FedEx, or at any Nordstrom store. |
| Return fees | No restocking fees. Original shipping charges are not refunded. |
| Nordstrom Rack purchase | 40 days, receipt required, $9.95 deducted per prepaid mail label. |
Nordstrom states plainly that there are no time limits for returns or exchanges. You can bring back a sweater from last season or shoes that split after a few wears, and the store will look at it. What the policy gives is flexibility, not a guarantee. The same page notes that Nordstrom handles returns case by case and may not accept a return from time to time.
In practice, the items most likely to be questioned are ones that look heavily worn, washed or altered, and special-occasion or designer pieces with their return tags removed. A clean item with its tags and a record of purchase is the easiest yes, whether it is two weeks or two years old.
Balsam Hill items sold through Nordstrom must be returned within 30 days of purchase or before December 25, whichever comes first, and only by calling 1.888.282.6060 for a label.
A receipt or order number is not strictly required, but it changes what you get back. Without one, Nordstrom may still be able to locate the purchase, for example through your Nordstrom account, and may ask you for more information.
The "current price" part matters. If you paid full price and the item is now marked down, a no-record return gives you the lower amount. Keeping the receipt, or at least the order confirmation email, protects the full value of your refund.
Return labels are no longer included in Nordstrom.com packages, so every mail return starts online.
Hazardous items such as some fragrances and aerosols must be packed separately with the special label Nordstrom provides. For oversized or perishable items, call customer service at 1.888.282.6060 first.
Refunds go to the original form of payment. If you paid with a mix, such as a card plus a gift card or Nordstrom Note, the money is split back proportionally, so hold on to gift cards even at a $0 balance. PayPal orders are refunded to the same PayPal account when returned by mail, while PayPal purchases returned in store get a Nordstrom gift card.
Exchanges follow the same no-time-limit rule as returns. In a store, any register can swap the size or color. Online, Nordstrom does not run a separate exchange flow: you order the replacement, either on the site or by calling 1.888.282.6060, and return the original. The new item is charged and the returned one is credited.
An exchange without a receipt works the same way as a no-receipt return. If Nordstrom cannot find the purchase, the value is based on the current price.
Most departments, including shoes, beauty and fragrance, follow the general policy above. Nordstrom does not publish a separate shoe return policy, so worn shoes fall under the same case-by-case review. These categories do have their own rules:
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Special-occasion dresses and designer items | Return in the original condition with packaging and tags attached. If a tag says the item cannot be returned once it is removed, that rule applies. |
| Fine jewelry | No mail returns. Take it to a Nordstrom store with a Fine Jewelry department, with your order confirmation or the card used. |
| Car seats and bases | Original unopened box with an unbroken seal. Defects go to the manufacturer. |
| Gift cards | Cannot be returned or redeemed for cash unless the law requires it. |
| Watchfinder & Co. pre-owned | Final sale. No refund or exchange. |
| Balsam Hill and Casper beds | Call 1.888.282.6060. Balsam Hill is not accepted in stores or by mail. |
| Marketplace (third-party sellers) | Return by the return-by date, unworn, undamaged, unaltered and with original tags. |
| Boutique purchases | Return to the store where you bought the item. |
International orders placed through Borderfree or ESW follow a different process and do not qualify for free returns.
Nordstrom Rack is the off-price arm, and the Nordstrom Rack return policy is much tighter than the full-line store's.
Rack purchases made from October 5 to December 24, 2026 can be returned until January 18, 2027, or 40 days after purchase, whichever is later. A gift bought in early October can still go back after the holidays.
Gift recipients can return eligible Rack items to any US Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack store. The refund comes as a Nordstrom gift card that works at both.
Yes, in most cases, and it works the other way too. The exceptions are the high-value categories.
| Return | Allowed? |
|---|---|
| Nordstrom or Nordstrom.com item to a Rack store | Yes, for eligible merchandise. |
| Nordstrom fine jewelry or designer item to Rack | No. These go back to a Nordstrom store. |
| Rack item to a Nordstrom store | Yes, for eligible items, under Rack's 40-day rules. |
| Nordstrom Marketplace item to Rack | No. Follow the seller's return process. |
The policy that applies is the one from where you bought it. A Rack item returned at a Nordstrom store still has the 40-day limit, and a Nordstrom item returned at Rack keeps Nordstrom's flexible terms.
Nordstrom's pricing policy covers its own price drops, not competitors'.
If you miss the 10-day window, returning the item and buying it again at the lower price is the usual workaround, as long as it is still in stock.
Nordstrom's lack of a deadline creates its own problem: you might need a receipt a year after the purchase, long after the paper has faded or the email is buried. And at the Rack, the 40-day clock and the receipt requirement make that record the difference between a card refund and nothing.
Manage Receipt's receipt scanner reads the store, date, total and line items from a photo of your Nordstrom or Rack receipt and saves the image. Online orders can come in through email receipts, so the order number is stored next to everything else. Gift receipts and warranty cards for bigger buys, such as fine jewelry, fit in the doc wallet. When a return comes up, search by store or date and show the record at the register.

There is no time limit for most returns or exchanges at Nordstrom. Each return is reviewed case by case. Nordstrom Rack is different, with a 40-day window.
Possibly. The policy sets no deadline, so an older item can be accepted, especially in good condition with a record of purchase. Nordstrom can still decline it, and without a sales record the refund is a gift card at the current price.
Yes. Nordstrom says it may not accept a return from time to time. Items that are worn, altered, missing required tags, or final sale are the most likely to be refused.
Often, yes. Nordstrom may find the purchase through your account or card. If there is no sales record and Nordstrom accepts the return, you need ID and get a Nordstrom gift card at the current price.
No. Returns to Nordstrom stores and by mail are free, with no restocking fee, though original shipping is not refunded. Nordstrom Rack deducts $9.95 per prepaid mail label.
Yes. Eligible Rack purchases can be returned at any Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack store within the Rack's 40-day window.
Rack accepts returns up to 40 days from the purchase or order date, so days 31 to 40 are still covered. After 40 days, returns are not accepted, except for holiday purchases with the extended deadline.
Yes, within 10 days of the in-store purchase or shipment date, for full-price items still available in the same color and size. Nordstrom does not price match other stores.
This guide is based on the Nordstrom returns and exchanges page, the Nordstrom Rack shipping and returns page and the Nordstrom pricing policy, checked in October 2026. Policies can change, so confirm with Nordstrom before a large return.
