How many days you have to return to Ulta, what happens after 30 days, which products Ulta won't take back, how to return an online order, and what to bring so your return isn't turned down.

Ulta gives a refund to your original payment method within 30 days of purchase for most new or gently used products. From 31 to 60 days, you get merchandise credit instead. After 60 days, Ulta doesn't accept the return. Every return needs a government-issued photo ID and proof of purchase, unless Ulta can find the purchase in its system.
Just shopped at Ulta?Snap the receipt now, so you have proof of purchase ready if that shade or scent doesn't work out.
Ulta is one of the easier beauty stores to return to, since it accepts gently used products. But the rules have tightened. Many guides still say you get a full refund for 60 days, while Ulta's current policy limits refunds to 30 days and asks for ID on every return.
Here's how the Ulta return policy works now, so you know exactly what you'll get back before you walk in. This guide is based on the current return and exchange rules on Ulta Beauty's Guest Services page.
| Rule | What Ulta allows |
|---|---|
| Refund window | 30 days from purchase, back to your original payment method |
| Merchandise credit window | 31 to 60 days from purchase |
| After 60 days | Not accepted |
| Product condition | New or gently used |
| Proof of purchase | Required, unless Ulta can verify the purchase in its system |
| ID | Government-issued physical ID plus your phone number or email, for every return |
| Online orders | Return in store or by mail |
| Exchanges | In store only, not by mail |
| Return shipping | Paid by you for mail returns, and not refunded |
| Gift cards | Can't be returned |
You have up to 60 days, but what you get back depends on when you return.
The clock starts on the original purchase date, not the day an online order arrives. Mail returns follow the same tiers: 30 days or less gets a refund to your original payment, 31 to 60 days gets an Ulta Beauty electronic gift card, and anything past 60 days is mailed back to you.
If you want your money back rather than store credit, return within 30 days. Day 31 turns a refund into merchandise credit.
Yes. Ulta accepts "new or gently used" products, so you can return makeup you've opened and tried, including foundation or concealer in the wrong shade. Skincare and hair care follow the same rule.
A few limits apply:
Ulta says it doesn't resell used, damaged or expired products, so a returned item won't end up back on the shelf.
Perfume and cologne follow the same rules as other products. You can return a gently used fragrance within 30 days for a refund, or from 31 to 60 days for merchandise credit. A bottle that's been mostly used is unlikely to count as gently used, so return a scent that isn't working for you early.
Fragrance gift sets should come back with all their pieces, and anything bought with a free gift should include that gift too.
Ulta's policy lists a few items that can't be returned:
A few other cases follow different rules:
Only if Ulta can find the purchase in its system. Ulta's policy says proof of purchase is required for any return unless the purchase can be verified, and products that can't be verified aren't eligible for a refund, exchange or merchandise credit.
In practice, a return without a paper receipt usually works when:
If none of those apply, Ulta can turn the return down. Older advice about getting store credit at the lowest selling price with no receipt doesn't match Ulta's current rules.
Even with a receipt, Ulta asks for a government-issued physical ID and your phone number or email for every return.
Exchanges happen in store. Bring the product, your receipt or order confirmation and your ID, and swap it for something else. Ulta doesn't do exchanges by mail, so for an online order you either take it to a store or mail it back for a refund and reorder.
With a gift receipt, you can exchange the item within 60 days for a product of equal or lesser value, or return it for merchandise credit.
Bring the product, the original order confirmation email and all original packaging to any store. This is the fastest option, and the only one that allows an exchange. Pickup and Same Day Delivery orders also go back to a store with your proof of purchase.
Ulta's terms describe a few mail options: creating a self-service label in your account order history, or getting a QR code online and dropping the package at a UPS location. You can also send it to the Ulta.com Return Center, 925 Belle Lane, Bolingbrook, IL 60490.
If an online order arrives damaged, you can return or exchange it in store with your receipt, or contact Ulta Guest Services for help sending it back.
| Situation | Refund method and timing |
|---|---|
| In-store return within 30 days | Back to your original payment |
| Mail return within 30 days | Original payment, processed within 30 business days after the item reaches Ulta's distribution center |
| Card refunds | Can take 7 to 10 days to show on your account |
| Paid with an Ulta gift card | Refunded as a new Ulta Beauty gift card |
| PayPal, Afterpay or similar, returned in store | Refunded to a card you choose, or merchandise credit |
| Paid by check | 10-day waiting period before a refund |
| 31 to 60 days | Merchandise credit, or an electronic gift card for mail returns |
If your purchase used a promotion, the discount is spread across the items, so a partial return may get back less than the shelf price.
No. Ulta doesn't publish a price match policy for competitors like Sephora, Target or Amazon, and its terms note that prices on Ulta.com can differ from prices in stores.
There's also no written price adjustment policy if an item goes on sale after you buy it, and coupons or points can't be applied to past purchases. If you spot a lower price on Ulta.com while shopping in store, ask an associate before you pay.
Ulta's Guest Services page doesn't list a holiday return extension, so the standard 30- and 60-day windows apply to holiday purchases unless your receipt says otherwise.
For gifts, a gift receipt lets the recipient exchange the item within 60 days for something of equal or lesser value, or get merchandise credit. Without a gift receipt, the return depends on whether Ulta can verify the original purchase.
Ulta's 30-day refund window is short, and the receipt is what keeps a return from turning into store credit or a flat no. Paper receipts get tossed with the shopping bag, and order emails get buried.
Manage Receipt keeps both in one place. Snap a store receipt at the counter with the receipt scanner, or pull Ulta order confirmations straight from your inbox with email receipts. The purchase date sits right on the receipt, so you can see at a glance whether you're still inside the 30-day refund window.
Keep every Ulta receipt within reachScan it at checkout and it's ready on your phone when you're standing at the return counter.
Ulta refunds most new or gently used products returned within 30 days to the original payment method. Returns from 31 to 60 days get merchandise credit, and returns after 60 days aren't accepted. You need ID and proof of purchase.
