HomeGoods gives you 30 days to return an in-store purchase with a receipt. Past that window, or without a receipt, you get store credit instead of your money back.

You can return merchandise bought in a HomeGoods store to any open HomeGoods store within 30 days of purchase. With the register receipt, you get an exchange or a refund in the original form of payment. After 30 days, with a gift receipt, or with no receipt at all, the return is for merchandise credit only.
HomeGoods is the kind of store where a lamp looks perfect in the aisle and wrong in your living room. The return policy itself is short, but three things decide whether you walk out with a refund or a credit: the purchase date, the receipt, and the condition of the item.
This guide was checked against the HomeGoods return policy and the HomeGoods customer service page on October 8, 2026.
| Your situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Receipt, within 30 days | Exchange or refund in the original form of tender |
| Receipt, after 30 days | May qualify for a merchandise credit, redeemable at any HomeGoods store |
| No receipt | Non-transferable merchandise credit. Photo ID, name, address and signature required |
| Gift receipt | Store credit only |
| Paid by check | Cash refund is available after a 10-day period |
| Used, damaged or altered item | Not accepted for refund, credit or exchange |
| Bought during the holiday season | Extended return window (dates below) |
You have 30 days from the date of purchase. The date printed on your register receipt is the one that counts, so a gift bought three weeks before it was handed over has only about a week left on the clock.
A receipt does not stop being useful on day 31. HomeGoods says returns with a receipt outside the 30-day timeframe "may qualify" for a merchandise credit. Two things are worth noticing in that wording. It is a credit, not a refund. And "may" leaves the decision with the store.
HomeGoods does not publish a hard cutoff for late returns, whether that is 60 days or 90. What stays constant is the condition rule: the item still has to be in original, sellable condition.
Yes, HomeGoods accepts returns without a receipt. You will not get cash or a refund to your card, though. An eligible return with no receipt is issued as a non-transferable merchandise credit. For the wider picture beyond HomeGoods, see our guide to returning items without a receipt.
The credit is tied to you. Any name printed on it must match the photo ID you show when you spend it, and HomeGoods may ask for ID again at that point. You cannot hand the credit to a friend or family member to use.
One more limit is easy to miss. HomeGoods runs returns through a refund verification system as part of its loss prevention program, and a return can be limited or declined based on it. The company does not publish how many no-receipt returns it allows, so treat this route as a fallback and not a habit.
Select HomeGoods stores offer an email receipt at checkout. You choose it on the PIN pad and enter your phone number and email address. HomeGoods confirms that an email receipt can be used in place of the paper one for a return, and the same return policy applies to it.
So before you accept store credit, search your email for HomeGoods. If the email receipt is there and you are inside 30 days, you are back to a normal refund.
Yes. An in-store purchase can go back to any open HomeGoods store, not only the one you bought it from. That helps if you picked something up while traveling or at a location across town.
It does not extend to the sister stores. The HomeGoods policy names HomeGoods stores only, and the same holds in the other direction: the Marshalls return policy does not allow Marshalls items to be returned to other TJX brands. A HomeGoods receipt belongs at a HomeGoods register, not at T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, Homesense or Sierra. If your local store is a combined HomeGoods and Marshalls or T.J. Maxx location, ask at the register, because the published policy does not cover those stores separately.
There is also no mail-in option. HomeGoods stopped selling online on October 21, 2023, and its current return policy covers items purchased in stores only. Every return is an in-person return.
To get a refund or exchange, the item has to come back in original condition. HomeGoods defines that as not damaged or altered, and returned with all hangtags and original packaging where possible.
"Where possible" gives a little room. A missing hangtag is not listed as an automatic refusal. A used item is. Merchandise that is used or in unsellable condition is not accepted for a refund, a store credit or an exchange, with or without a receipt.
This matters more at HomeGoods than at a clothing store, because so much of what it sells shows use quickly. A candle that has been lit or bedding that has been through the wash cannot go back on the shelf, and the store will treat it that way.
If an item does not meet the condition standard, the policy says it will be returned to you at your expense.
HomeGoods extends its return window for the holiday season, so gifts bought in October are not out of time by Christmas.
For the most recent season, purchases made between October 5, 2025 and December 24, 2025 could be returned through January 24, 2026. Purchases made from December 26, 2025 went back to the normal 30-day policy.
As of October 8, 2026, the HomeGoods returns page still shows those 2025 season dates and has not yet posted dates for the 2026 holiday season. Check the page before you rely on an extended window this year.
The extension changes the deadline and nothing else. A gift receipt is still valid for store credit only, and a return without any receipt is still a merchandise credit with photo ID.
A HomeGoods trip rarely ends with one item. It is a throw pillow, two frames, a candle and a serving bowl on a single slip of thermal paper. Three weeks later you want to return just the frames, and that one slip is the difference between a refund and a credit locked to your ID.
One slip of paper covers the whole cart.
Email receipts help, but only select stores offer them. A simple habit covers the rest: scan the receipt before you leave the parking lot. The AI receipt scanner in Manage Receipt reads the store, date and total, so you can search "HomeGoods" later and see exactly how many days you have left. If your store did send an email receipt, email receipts keeps it next to the scanned ones.
One honest note: the HomeGoods policy refers to the register receipt and the email receipt. A scanned copy in Manage Receipt tells you the date, amount and card you used, and whether a store accepts it at the counter is the store's call. Keep the paper original until the return window closes.
You can return in-store purchases to any open HomeGoods store within 30 days. With a register receipt you get an exchange or a refund in the original form of tender. After 30 days, with a gift receipt, or without a receipt, you receive merchandise credit only.
Yes. Eligible returns without a receipt receive a non-transferable merchandise credit. You need a valid government-issued photo ID, and the store records your name, address and signature. HomeGoods may ask for ID again when you redeem the credit.
Possibly, if you have the receipt. Returns with a receipt outside the 30-day window may qualify for a merchandise credit that you can spend at any HomeGoods store. You will not get a refund to your card or in cash.
Yes. Merchandise purchased in a HomeGoods store can be returned to any open HomeGoods store, not just the location where you bought it.
The HomeGoods return policy only names HomeGoods stores as return locations, and TJX brands do not accept each other's returns under their published policies. Take HomeGoods purchases back to a HomeGoods store.
The published policy does not mention a receipt lookup service. If you chose an email receipt at checkout, search your inbox, since HomeGoods accepts it in place of the paper receipt. Otherwise, expect the return to be handled as a no-receipt return.
HomeGoods asks for items in original condition with hangtags and original packaging where possible. An opened but unused item may still qualify. Anything used, damaged, altered or unsellable will not be accepted for a refund, credit or exchange.
Yes. A gift receipt is valid for store credit only, so the person returning the gift will not receive cash or a refund to the buyer's card.
HomeGoods extends its return window each holiday season. For the 2025 season, purchases made from October 5 through December 24, 2025 could be returned through January 24, 2026. Dates for the 2026 season had not been posted as of October 8, 2026.
No. HomeGoods closed its online store in October 2023 and now sells in stores only, so returns are made in person at a HomeGoods store.
